Derby Top 10: Hot Rod Charlie Speeds In At No. 4; Pletcher Still Looking For A Derby Contender

By Richard Rosenblatt

In the 21 years since Todd Pletcher first saddled horses in the Kentucky Derby, the soon-to-be Hall of Fame trainer has only missed one Run for the Roses.

It could happen again in 2021. Entering this weekend’s three Derby preps worth 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the first four finishers, Pletcher’s best shot appears to be Known Agenda in the $750,000 Florida Derby (G1).

While Pletcher does not have any of his 3-year-olds in this week’s usracing.com Derby Top 10, that could change in a hurry.

Known Agenda is the 5-1 third betting choice in the Florida Derby as he comes into the race off an 11-length win at Gulfstream Park in an allowance optional claimer at 1 1/8 miles – the same distance as the Florida Derby.

Pletcher is optimistic, even though Known Agenda has just 2 Derby qualifying points from a third-place finish in the Remsen (G3) on Dec. 5. He also has maiden winner Sainthood entered in the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park on Saturday, and a few more prospects for the Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct on April 3.

Pletcher has saddled more Derby starters than any trainer (55), and each year he usually leads all trainers in horses nominated to the Triple Crown. It’s almost as tough to imagine a Derby without Pletcher – a two-time winner — than one without six-time Derby winning trainer Bob Baffert.

Of course, that won’t happen in Baffert’s case. Even with his ace Life Is Good off the Triple Crown trail with an injury, he still has Rebel Stakes (G2) winner Concert Tour, who checks in at No. 2 in the Top 10. He also has San Felipe (G2) runner-up Medina Spirit at No. 5, with the colt likely to run in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) next weekend. Also, Spielberg moves in at No. 8 before taking on No. 2 Greatest Honour in the Florida Derby.

Essential Quality, the unbeaten winner of the Southwest Stakes (G3) and 2-year-old male champion, remains No. 1 this week.

Hot Rod Charlie, winner of the Louisiana Derby (G2) last week, zooms in at No. 4 for trainer Doug O’Neill and moves to the top of the Derby points leaderboard with 110. Midnight Bourbon, who ran second in the Louisiana Derby, remains in the Derby Top 10 at No. 9.

Keep an eye on the Jeff Ruby Steaks, where Hush of a Storm and Gretzky the Great top a 12-horse field.

Listed below, in addition to the opening Derby Future wager odds for Pool 5 [which closes March 28], are the up-to-date odds from BUSR.com.
